Chapter Fifteen

Cutter waited in his idling truck until he saw the two strangers leave the restaurant. They pulled out in the direction the Havlicek truck had gone earlier. Allowing another vehicle to get behind them, Cutter pulled out and trailed at a modest pace.

He was surprised when the car didn’t travel far. After only a few streets, the men turned left. Cutter kept going straight, but another left brought him back within sight of their unassuming sedan. He paused at the stop sign, watching as they pulled into the parking lot behind the old roller rink.

The building had been empty for years. Word was that it had sold last year, though no one knew who the buyer was. So far, no renovations had been made, and no announcements had come about its future use. For all they knew, the new owner intended to bulldoze the historic building to the ground and start over.

The more likely story was that someone had an insider tip about the proposed interstate coming through town and had gobbled up the property, hoping to make a tidy profit. Cutter knew for a fact that several people—the Werners, Reggie Carr, and Myrna Lewis, for starters—were now experiencing buyer’s regret, after having done the same thing.

As he wondered what the men were up to, he saw another car pull behind the abandoned building. He wasted no time in picking up his phone and placing a call.

“Oscar? I hate to bother you while you’re on vacation, but do you mind if I park near your house? Maybe behind that old shed at the back?”

“Not at all, Cutter. Is something wrong? You don’t see smoke, do you?” the other man asked in worry.

“No, no. Nothing like that. I’m helping Brash.” He scrambled to think of a plausible excuse. “With all these visitors in town, they seem to think it’s okay to race up and down our streets, even residential ones like yours.”

“Ah, a little speed trap.” Oscar chuckled.

“Something like that,” Cutter answered vaguely.

“No problem, Cutter. Anytime.”

“Thanks. I appreciate it.”

With the homeowner’s blessing, Cutter found a good place to hide while having a clear view of the roller rink. Oscar’s house was catty-corner from its parking lot, and his old shed offered the perfect camouflage for Cutter’s truck.

Cutter sent Brash a text of his whereabouts and told him not to worry. He had it covered.

Now, all he had to do was sit back and wait.

Two other vehicles had arrived before the sedan. No one exited any of their vehicles until a familiar green pickup pulled into the gravel lot. When Doug Havlicek crawled out, the others followed suit. Cutter counted seven men trailing in behind the newly released inmate.

“Son of a gun,” Cutter mumbled. “It didn’t take him long to pick up where he left off.”

He made a note in his phone of the people he recognized and descriptions of those he didn’t. He waited, and five more men showed up.

When it seemed obvious that no one else would arrive, Cutter sent a message to Brash that he was moving in by foot for a closer look.
